What Do You Call Strategic Planning

Posted by Jay Dziwlik, MBA, CAE on May 24, 2017 12:00:00 PM

checklist-1622517_640.jpgIn a house with teenagers, the words “whatever” and “like” come up more often than the ghosts of my English teachers would prefer. But have you noticed that every association and board of directors seems to have its favorite terms and phrases? I think this is especially true in strategic planning.

Here is my list:

  • Strategy session
  • Core competencies
  • Focus plan
  • Collaboration planning
  • Future engineering
  • Visioning
  • Governing models
  • Business plan
  • Annual planning
  • Ends means
  • Strategy mapping
  • SWOT strategy
  • Strategy operations
  • War gaming
  • Formation strategy
  • Future committee
  • Customer needs plan
  • Focus plan
  • Priorities focus
  • Blueprint for future
  • Policy planning design
  • Solution-based strategy
  • Key core plan
  • Master plan

With this list, you can apparently put together any series of words that relate to planning and some future time. It must be kind of like your stage name, where you take the name of your first pet and put it together with the name of the street where you spent your childhood. I think I am going to start using “Chips Browning” as my strategic planning name.

I am not sure what the fixation is about the term used to describe strategic planning. If we would put all that creative energy into the strategic planning process we might have better plans and simpler titles. Strategic planning at its core is thinking about where you are, where you want to go and where you are going to use those precious limited resources towards that end. Despite what you call it, please spend more time doing it well than talking about what name you want to give it. You could call it “Chips Browning” if you want.
