Wrapping Up the 2016 Indiana Legislative Session

The Indiana General Assembly adjourned the 2016 session on March 10, 2016. This session was closely watched, maybe more so than usual, as the two chambers considered legislation to provide statewide protections to LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer) Hoosiers in employment and housing. While numerous pieces of legislation to provide these protections were introduced by both Democrats and Republicans, all of this legislation died without making it through the legislative process.

The Indiana General Assembly convened on Tuesday, January 5 to begin the 2016 legislative session. Lawmakers face a compact legislative timeline of only 10 weeks due to the short legislative session which will conclude in March. In the span of less than three months, lawmakers have a host of pressing issues to address, among them addressing civil rights issues, improving the state‚Äôs roads, increasing the number of Indiana educators, addressing issues with ISTEP and finding a solution to the rising abuse of methamphetamines and heroin.
