I just finished four years of coaching. It was expensive. It required time out of the office. And it’s one of the best things I’ve ever done. Here’s why:
- I had four days blocked out on my calendar each year. These were days committed to working on my business, not just in. There’s a difference. Most days are “get work done” days. My coaching days were “thinking about the business” days. These days allowed me to take a step back without the pressure of deadlines or phone calls or meeting or emails. I was able to take an objective look at what was working and more importantly, what wasn’t. I developed strategy to change what wasn’t. And when I got back to the office, I was ready to hit the ground running in order to execute the plan.
- I was around people from whom I learned. There’s power in being around people you aren’t normally around. I was able to listen and observe, ask and learn. Some challenged my thinking; others applauded it. And in challenging others, I was able to come to new conclusions and ask myself fresh questions that led to breakthrough thinking. This new crew of compatriots helped create a new professional in me.
- One idea can create a seismic shift. When one thing changes, other things change, too. That’s why one simple idea can be so powerful; it has ripple effects. One idea gleaned from group coaching can transform a business, a mind, a life or an association. Commit to pursuing new ideas every day and everywhere. When you capture one, it’s worth the chase.
Why am I sharing this? I’m hoping it will challenge you to ask yourself, “When was the last time I invested in myself?” When you invest in yourself, you invest in your association. And if you’re the CEO, COO or second in command, you’re likely busy coaching others—and not getting coached yourself. So here’s an invitation. You’re hereby invited to join a select group of association executives who will meet four times over the next year in Indianapolis to invest in themselves as part of a group leadership coaching program called Association Strategy Circles. I’ll be facilitating the event and we’ll be tackling everything from staffing to branding to storytelling to obstacle-busting. We’ll challenge each other’s thinking. We’ll help solve each other’s problems. Most importantly, we’ll be different because we chose to come together to think, to grow and to learn.
When you seek knowledge, you find it. And investing in yourself pays dividends. No one can take away what you learn. You’ll carry what you learn into your next job—or perhaps retirement! Plus, gains in your professional life spill over into your personal life.
From a practical standpoint, this 24 hours of CAE credit will be some of the least expensive you pay for—just $25 per hour! Seating is limited so don’t delay. I hope to see you in Indy!
