What's In It for Me? Innovative Solutions for Low Member Engagement

Posted by Kim Paugh, CAE on Sep 3, 2014 10:00:00 AM

One common theme comes up in most ISAE Membership Shared Interest Group (SIG) meetings; our members have high expectations, but low engagement. In other words, members increasingly want organizations to quantify “what's in it for me;” however life is moving faster and faster which gives members little time to engage. As membership professionals, we are constantly working on innovative solutions to this problem.

Over the past six months, the ISAE Membership SIG group has come up with many great ideas including member retention and membership growth strategies, onboarding, program ideas and value propositions. We also spend a lot of time talking about how to sell these great ideas to volunteers and leadership.

The ISAE Membership SIG currently has 25 members from state, national and international organizations including trade, professional and Greek. The differences in our organizations are a strength because it allows SIG members to get a new perspective on their organization’s challenges. Meetings are informal and while there is a central topic to the discussion all are welcome to bring their challenges and ideas to share with the group.

Need new ideas for your association? Connect with the ISAE Membership SIG to share your challenges and learn from others. You can also download The Association's Guide to Process-Driven Membership Sales, a resource that explains what some of the most common membership challenges are, how to overcome them and how to truly develop a system for member recruitment.
