Why would anyone want to send out an assessment to their co-workers, direct reports, managers, clients and vendors asking them to rate their emotional intelligence? The mere thought of being evaluated can make some nauseous. Recently, in preparation for a day-long training, I had to send a 360 degree assessment to professionals with whom I interact. The assessment would be used in a detailed report I would receive as part of my Emotional and Social Competency Inventory Accreditation with the Hay Group.
Halfway through the training, the leader handed us our results and informed us we would have 20 minutes to digest the feedback. I opened my booklet and reviewed the results and verbatims on how others perceived my strengths and weaknesses. I gained valuable insights on how I excelled in the eyes of others, and ways I could be more effective in the future.
So what is Emotional Intelligence (EI) and why is it important to your career? EI, or EQ, involves four competencies:
- Self Awareness
- Self Management
- Social Awareness
- Relationship Management
According to psychologist and author Daniel Goleman, there are key things that emotionally intelligent people do:
- They are aware of their feelings.
- They are able to control and manage their emotions.
- They have great social skills.
- They understand how to manage relationships at work and are able to identify the underlying causes of their emotions.
A co-worker snaps at you about a project you are working on together. You are upset over the way he spoke to you and feel it was totally unacceptable. Instead of reacting, you take a day to reflect. The next morning you ask if you could talk with your colleague and ask if there is anything going on in his life because he seems stressed and easily upset. Your colleague explains he had to put his dog down the day before and he has been very upset. Emotionally intelligent people are able to look at the situation and correctly identify the true source of their feelings.
