Posted by Dawn Sparks on Oct 11, 2018 8:07:00 AM

I had lunch with a former colleague recently. I’m calling her Trish to protect her privacy, but the truth is, it’s unlikly she’ll recognize herself in this story. But I’m not giving up hope just yet.

Posted by Katherine Mandusic Finley, Ph.D., CAE, CFRE, CMP on Sep 12, 2018 9:00:00 AM

“Get Focused” was the theme of this year’s ASAE meeting held in Chicago, August 18-21. ASAE gives association executives an opportunity to leave their office issues and problems behind for a few days (or at least in theory) and “get focused” on making their associations better.

5 Takeaways from the 2018 ISAE Convention

Posted by Ashley Roy on Jul 25, 2018 11:15:00 AM

We had a wonderful time last week in Noblesville for the 2018 ISAE Convention. The location was great, Top Golf was a fun outing and we had wonderful speakers spanning the industry. I now know that I cross my arms too much and that coloring outside the lines means you’re a free spirit and creative thinker - not messy.

Top Five Reasons to Attend the ISAE Convention

Posted by Melissa Heeke, CAE on Jun 26, 2018 11:15:00 AM

The annual convention provides the relevant education and networking opportunities to help association professionals at all levels (not just the top staff position) emerge as more confident leaders and demonstrates that ISAE builds stronger leaders who lead stronger associations. If you have never attended an ISAE convention, I hope to give you ample reasons and encouragement to make this year your first year to participate.
  1. Colleagues, Peers, and Friends - The ISAE convention is big enough that I can always meet someone new and small enough to be able to enjoy learning and hanging out with longtime friends. Peers from micro-staffed associations to some of the largest national and international associations will be in attendance to learn and share.

  2. Convenient Hamilton Co. Location - This year’s convention will be held at the beautiful new Embassy Suites by Hilton in Noblesville. The all-suites hotel just opened its doors for business in early June, which will make our group one of the very first to enjoy the space.

Side note for Central Indiana association professionals: Even though Embassy Suites in Noblesville is close enough for you to “commute,” to make the most of the convention experience commit to staying for the duration. Making the mental shift into learning mode can be challenging. Another excellent benefit to being so close to home is that ISAE now offers a “closing reception only” ticket so you can invite association friends and significant others to attend. I have invited my husband as a guest that evening and look forward to introducing him to my association colleagues as we wrap up the convention with the CAE Reception, Young Professionals Pre-Game, and the Closing Bash!
  1. Finally Getting to Top Golf - ISAE will be taking full advantage of the hotel’s proximity to Top Golf Fishers with the convention kick-off party on Monday night. (No worries, there will be shuttle service to/from the event.) This means that many of us will finally get to experience Top Golf!

  2. Learning from Experts and Peers - I’m especially looking forward to learning from experts in Monday’s in-depth Deep Dive sessions and Tuesday’s keynote presentations while learning from my association peers in those breakout sessions in between. The convention schedule has been cleverly designed to complete the educational line up with a peer-to-peer learning lab, so we have the opportunity to share our experiences and “ah-ha moments” with one another before wrapping up for the day. As a bonus: Attendees earn up to 10 CAE credits!

  3. Competitive and Collaborative Networking Opportunities – All attendees will have an option to join the annual cornhole tournament or participate in the community service project. No matter your style, Monday afternoon is an excellent opportunity to socialize with your peers. Though I’ve never played in the tournament, I’ve heard that the cornhole tournament can get a little competitive. Fear not; you have plenty of time to brush up on the America Cornhole Association’s official rules! While significantly less competitive, the community service project affords attendees the opportunity to feel good knowing that we have done good in our host community. This year that means that we’ll be working with the Good Samaritan Network to assemble hygiene kits for the Hamilton County Co-Op. So, while the rest of the convention is business casual, be sure to bring along some comfortable (and cool) clothing for Monday afternoon’s activities!

If you’re in the association space, regardless of your career stage or experience level, the ISAE convention will provide you with the opportunities to learn from and engage with peers who share the same acronym-laden language.

Avoid Bright Shiny Object/Rusty Piece of Junk Syndromes

Posted by Katherine Mandusic Finley, Ph.D., CAE, CFRE, CMP on Jun 21, 2018 11:11:00 AM

Board and committees often propose projects that they claim will bring in lots of money, won’t require any money or staff time, are horribly complicated and misguided, and divert staff and money from other important projects. In short, the board or committee (or even staff) focuses on the “bright shiny object” to the detriment of other programs and services. The reverse of this scenario is when projects don’t produce money nor do they keep or retain members (and may not even be in line with the organization’s mission), but the board refuses to terminate them. Then those once shiny objects become rusty pieces of junk costing the association resources and staff time but not helping increase revenue or visibility of the association.
